Samsung HD860 upscaling DVD currently available for £59 through Pixmania. Just received mine. Doesnt come with HDMI cable so buy one of ebay if your wanting to see existing DVDs upscaled on your new TV.

hi,
i have heard mixed reviews about the hdmi input on this. Am i better to go for something a little more expensive? say the Sony DVP-NS76H? I want something that will make a noticable change on hdmi to standard dvd's. It also has to be very easy to set up and you can save setings (nothing worse than having to change everything everytime you watch a movie!)
Thanks

I couldnt say. All I did was point you in the direction of a player that is in the pricerange asked for. Im waiting for the HDMI cable to arrive, at which point I'll be able to assess how good the player is. I am hoping to see a noticeable change.
As with most things AV, you tend to get what you pay for. Going for a more advanced player might be the way forward, its really down to how much your willing to spend, and researching each player based on what your looking for and what people are saying about them.
I bought the Samsung, as a) it goes with my TV b) its in the pricerange Im looking for c) i done enough research to know that if i configure everything correctly, I should expect to see a noticeable difference. If this is not the case, I will be sending it straight back.
Good luck.

No, you don't need to update your player, and if you're spending under ?0 I wonder if you would see much improvement at all if you did, unless your's is a ?0 job.
Unless you spend around at least ?50, or even more, it's unlikely that the scaler in your TV will be worse than that of a DVD player under this sort of price, and for upscaling players of around ?50, they're likely to be worse than your TV's.
It's possible to get picture improvements from various players, but don't think it's all about upscaling.

like i mentioned, the player i have now is a Toshiba SD-140E so pretty low tech. Is it worth it for the sony?

I couldn't tell you I'm afraid.
I believe many on here have one. So try a few searches if you haven't already.
Hopefully, a machine which costs ?5 today will outperform a player which cost ?0 a few years ago. But this is not always the case.

It's always hard to find people with the same display here. Try posting in the LCD forum. Hopefully someone there will have your TV.:)

would the hdmi connection not offer an improvement on picture quality alone regardless of any upscaling benefit?
i am noticing that my dvd (pioneer dvr433) has the slightest little blur , especially on text ever so briefly when it appears on screen (like on a EPG display), yet my Sky box alone looks OK via a different scart.
there may well be other factors, like poor quality scart lead, but all else being equal would the hdmi connection offered even by the cheapest HDMI DVD offer a better quality image?
