Worth upgrading to a new dvd player ?

I have a Yamaha s540 dvd player connected to a Toshiba 32wlt66 lcd tv via component input using progressive scan.
I have had this player for a couple of years now and to me the picture seems pretty good.
My question is would it be worth me upgrading to one of the new upscaling dvd players using a HDMI input and would there be a noticable improvement.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Well I did just that....as mentioned on another thread, partially to free up my component input for my 360, but partly because with upscaling AND an HDMI connection I thought I was going to get a significantly better picture...even though the one I was getting with my Pioneer with Component/P.Scan on was pretty damn good.

I have to say I was dissapointed. The picture is still excellent...in fact on some things like the Austin Powers movies or LOTR it's stunning! But then it was before. And i've just payed out ?0 for Sony upscaler and ?5 for an HDMI lead in the end, purely to free up my component input! :god:

If you're happy with what you've got, don't waste your money...unless you're planning on buying a top-end player.

Hi,

I assume that this was the Sony Dvp-ns76h? I notice that you have a 360 too - xbox not a tosh I guess?? If so can you tell me if there was any notable difference in quality of the sony over hdmi and the 360 playback.

Thanks

Well I would...but i've never actually played a dvd on the Xbox360....I should try it now it's component connected.

The only comparison I can give is the Sony with hdmi upscaling vs the Pioneer with component and PS...and as mentioned...hard to tell any difference whatsoever.

Well if you've got some time to kill I'm sure there are a few people that would appreciate your opinion...:smashin:

If you think the pictures pretty good, then why change? For 32" size screens there is a definite limit to pq improvements; if you have a very big screen, then you can get improvements upto the £1800 area.

I would listen to Bishop Beesley. Unless you spend around £200 you may get very little benefit.
