DVD-A/SACD with good audio and disc handling?

I need to get a new audio player, and it needs to be a CD/DVD-A/SACD one. Important are sound quality, and disc handling/ergonomics. My ancient Sony CDP-750 has very fast handling and perfect controls; my Pioneer DVD-656A (or whatever number it is) is horribly slow and clunky - almost to the point of unusability.

This new machine will probably never be connected to an AV set-up, so picture quality etc really doesn't matter.

Any suggestions. (I would be surprised if I could be persuaded to buy a Pioneer again...)

PS Coaxial SPDIF would be nice.

Hi there

How important is DVD-A to you? If you could drop that I would recommend you go for a CD/SACD player, which obviously is designed solely with audio playback in mind.

You COULD go for something like a Denon 2930, but if it's never to be used in a video capacity, then you are throwing a lot of money at a machine which doesnt have hi-fi quality as it's prime purpose.

I made a decision last year to buy a high-end Marantz CD/SACD player purely for audio, and use a Denon 2930 for DVD and DVD-A playback.

To cover all formats to a high standard you need to look at an ARCAM player I think, but you are in the ?k plus range then.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Arcam is out of the question just now.

DVD-A is just as important as SACD to me - in fact right now it is a DVD-A disc which is sitting by the machine waiting to be played. But both are only for occasional use, of course.

If it had to be a universal machine, and I don't want to go for the Arcam right now, which would you suggest? Denon? (How quick is the disc handling?)

I have a DAC Magic 2i (I think it is called) which my current CD player goes through, so perhaps a less-good-than-Arcam universal player going through that for CD would be a good compromise for the moment.

I am very very pleased with my Harman Kardon DVD-47. Does all you want in a small box, with excellent sound!
Available for < 500 euro, hence less than 350 pounds I guess.
