yes they will play standard def, but from what i have read the upscaling is not quite up to that of a quality standard dvd player
but if you're going to keep the denon, and just go hd, then go for it
i personaly am waiting until the second gen players arrive- but i am itching to buy one, would so love to be one of the first adopters of hd-dvd

Put me down as another one of support the previous replies...yes the HD DVD will play the standard DVDs as they are backward compatible. I am seriously considering getting into the HD craze myself but will need to wait until the spring as I will be away on a work assignment. The little time away from home will allow me to assess how the new Blu-ray players will fair once they hit the market near or after christmas and see how the second generation HD DVD players from Toshiba work out.....I am getting very itchy....so much so that I carry a tube of "gold b**d"

Depending on where you source you HD DVD player from they will have differeing capabilities re playing 'ordinary SD' DVDs. Their upscaling abilities are however pretty good but I got the best out of mine playing R1 discs at 480 from the component output.

We do not yet know what DVDs UK sourced G2 player will play. The current US models play r0, r1 NTSC only.

Have seen the Tosh HD player playing SD material. If you want the best out of SD I would stay with a top end SD machine, it does the job far better.

Eventually, a very top end HD player maybe able to play SD discs as good as a dedicated quality SD player but there's nothing out there yet for sure.

the tosh A1 @1080i via HDMI upscales quite well, test patterns showed this to keep full burst resolution, in fact it did much better than the Panny S97 i have, so it has a better scaler than that unit for sure.
It could not get close to the Denon A1xv i had but then thats no surprise is it, so
its not up to the real high end models as its deinterlcing could be better, but is in line with say mid range players, problem is its limited to region 1 for SD dvd
