HDMI(Y,Pb,Pr) or HDMI(RGB)

On the setup menu of my DVD player it gives you the choice of HDMI(RGB) or HDMI(Y,Pb,Pr) for the HDMI socket output.

Choosing either doesn't seem to alter PQ one way or the other.

What is the difference and on what basis should you choose one over the other?

Sounds like a good DVD player, then.

Just as analogue connections can be RGB or YPbPr, so can digital connections, and for just the same reasons. RGB is used for capture and display, and component is used for storage and broadcast.

Both are used at some point in the replay chain, and which should be used for the interconnection will depend on where the better transcoding is performed.

If the player has the better transcoder, then you should use RGB, etc.

If it makes no difference, then, well, it makes no difference.

Nick
