Not sure you'll get anything near audiofile quality out of a sub ?00 DVD player - but a Denon 1930 /Oppo (numerous discussion threads on this forum  )on these players, might be worth consideration..
However, set your sights at a Arcam or Denon 3930 and the step up (both for audio and playback) may meet your needs, if not your budget
Sounds as though you need to demo a few at your local home cinema dealer, which might help here..

I too have the tosh 32WLT66 and have just purchased the OPPO981HD very impressed with the PQ at 720p. Sound also better than my old tosh SD220E. For ?89 from CRT I don't think you can go wrong. Can't say how much better a ?00 player would be but I really don't think that unless you spend ?00+ you will beat the OPPO.

Thanks both for the suggestions, what do you think about speaker choice?

I have a Cambridge Audio DVD89 running through a Yamaha 757 amp and Epos Els3 5.1 surround speakers and the sound is excellent. The speakers are maybe too good for the Yamaha but at least I will not have to change them on the next upgrade. They are that good!
