Is it true that just about ALL DVD's are 6.1 surround sound and 5.1 surround sound, even though they don't say it on the packaging..
Cheers guys

No.
If a disc has Dolby Digital included, part of the TMA states that the correct channel assignments MUST be displayed.
If it has 5.1, it will say so.
If it has 6.1 (Dolby Digital EX) it will say that too.
If it is matrixed, you will be told.
If it has none of these, then it is stereo only.

Neil is absolutely correct, but it is safe to assume that any DVD made in the last few years containing a mainstream film made in the last 5 or so years will almost certainly have a 5.1 or 6.1 audio track on it.

Not true I am afraid.
It seems that DVD manufacturers did not wnt to confuse consumers by putting Dolby EX or DTS ES on the packaging.
A prme example of this is Pirates of the Carribean This dvd has a Dolby EX soundtrack and a DTS ES soundtrack. Nowhere on the packaging does it state this. The only reason i know it has it is because it triggers the SB channel light on my amp.
But here is another bone of contention. Not all DVD's which are encoded with a Dolby EX sountrack have the flag to trigger the SB channel light. It seems that all the DTS ones do have the flag.
So you could be watching a dvd with a Dolby EX soundtrack and not know it due to there being no labelling in the packaging and no flag on the dvd to let you know that the movie has EX.
To further confuse things a movie that was shown at the cinema may have had an EX soundtrack which was only transferred to dvd in 5.1.
There was a page on the Dolby website which used to let you know which films and dvd's were encoded with Dolby EX but I can't find it at the moment.
Currently I run my amp with it se to output everything (moviewise) through all seve speakers and have the auto flag detection mode tuned off.( Not sure if the sme terminology is used by all manufacturers). This way If I do have an EX or ES movie playing then I always get the correct decoding and it works well with regular 5.1 stuff aswell.

Dont forget especially on older dvd's that the default soundtrack was the Dolby 2.0 one. There may have been a 5.1 soundtrack but you have to manually select it.

When I rented 'The Machinist" that wasn't in 5.1. I had to use Dolby PlII. I'm sure it's 5.1 if you buy it.

I may have missed something on the menus, but I remember being fairly  about it at the time, especially when I read a review (I think it was one of the forums) giving the soundtrack a  . I hate Pro Logic II.

i very much doubt if you done anything wrong mate,5.1 should have been automaticly selected,
its horrible watching a dvd when not in 5.1:( it put me off watching the film altogether

Yes, it's amazing how much difference the soundtrack makes. It's just not the same without the 5.1. One of the worst things is that you don't get a proper .1 feed for the sub.
