Quite possibly the dumbest question about dvd playback ever...... |
freestyle 05-02-2007, 11:54 AM God i'm going to sound dumb. :suicide:
Imagine i have a cheapo dvd player, it's connected to a 6.1 capable amp via optical/coax.
Even though it's a cheapo dvd player can i still experience DD-EX DTS-ES because of the digital connection to the amp? eg: does the dvd player need to understand the audio it's outputting?
Badger0-0 05-02-2007, 12:12 PM If your amp is capable of it, it'll be ok :smashin:
D'jambo 05-02-2007, 12:14 PM Cant be 100% sure, but my experience tells me that you need the DVD to be able to read the DTS signal on the disc, maybe the amp can do the job if its i-link.
Liam @ Prog AV 05-02-2007, 12:17 PM So long as el cheapo DVD player has Dolby Digital and DTS decoders in it (pretty much a given) then you're fine.
DD-EX and DTS-ES use a matrixed rear centre channel i.e. the information is matrixed into the RL and RR channels (so the DVD player doesn't even need to know). When the 5.1 ES/EX matrix information is received by a DDEX or DTS ES decoder (i.e. your amp) the decoder is able to seperate out the rear centre channel.
DTS ES 6.1 Discrete I'm not 100% sure about. This is the only truly discrete 6.1 delivery system but I think it's still a case that the output of the DVD is fine so long as the decoder is capable.

Look at your cheapo dvd player,if it has the Dolby Digital and DTS logo on it,then it has the ability to output audio digitally to an amp or receiver with an inbuilt decoder for both.
On your amp/receiver there will be an additional logo for DD-EX and DTS-ES,which will allow the extra audio information contained on the DVD disc,to be decoded internally by the amp/receiver.
So the short answer to your question is - yes you should be ok. :)
Of course the next question has to be...why are you considering using a "cheapo" DVD player in such a system? ;)

freestyle 05-02-2007, 4:44 PM Cheers for the replies guys.
Im thinking about something like this (http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=320692) and pairing it with a Sony STR-DG700 (that's if i can get the wife to stop whinging).
OBviously i want to take full advantage of the DD-EX and DTS-ES titles i have in my collection.

I have had a few Philips DVD players, one is now with the daughter, another with my son, and I still have my 615 recorder.
They give very good pictures, even on scart (RGB) Extremley good value and not what I would class as a Supemarket special.

Thats because it isnt.
