Xbox 360 DVD playback - Better than Pioneer-575

Bought a Pio 575 about a year ago to replace a crappy budget player. ?20

Got an xbox 360 the other day, the DVD playback is far superior to the 575...

If you want a player that is well priced, get an xbox 360!

sorry if this is spam, but seriously the difference is night and day - (both tested using high quality component cables on a Hitachi 42inch 6600)

You forgot the buzzing(working) sound coming from the 360 tho.

How much better is the 360 at playing DivX/XviD files than then 575? :smashin:

Although i use my Denon 1920 to watch DVD's on my LCD, i was actually really surprised by the picture the 360 gave through component.

It's clear and crisp and although the 360 does make the noise from the fans it's a worthy and really decent player

I would recommend it if your on a budget and want a games console at the same time

I beg to differ. I find the 360 a mediocre DVD-player at best, it has serious issues when the picture is panning, which in my book is a big no-no.
An example would be the R2 version of "Shrek" when the camera is panning over landscapes.
My now defunct Samsung 4000? (not sure of the number, it's gone to recycling heaven) handled that scenery just fine.
I guess how PQ is perceived is an all subjective matter, but I find that most budget DVD-players beats the 360.
Most DVD-players don't play games as well, though. ;)

Yeah I wasnt to impressed. Some claim the x box (original) has a better dvd player.

hmmm, I'm pretty surprised that people aren't too pleased with it?

I found

1. Better colour and contrast (seemed to be able to bring out colour, but never overdo it)

2. crispier picture

3. Quieter!!! (I know the xbox makes a noise, but its more of a background noise that doesn't change in volume, the 575 is pretty noisy insofar as you can hear the disc spinning)...

I dunno, I have only tested

Napolean Dynamite R2
Elf R2

Both seemed superb...and almost 3D like on the xbox...

lol, maybe I'm bumming off it a little bit too much ;) but was just very surprised by how good it was.

Original xbox is nowhere near as good for dvd playback, the people who have been saying that are people who have had problems in general and aren't happy with the noise it makes from what I've read...

ah I dunno was just trying to help really :)

Try watching the opening battle from Revenge of the Sith on the XBOX360 through component.....the pic quality is sharper and richer than ANYTHING i've seen on a standard def player.
As an R2 DVD player, the 360 is utterly outstanding. Those of you who disagree must be playing through RGB or need your glasses cleaning or something.. ..the pic quality on my 50 inch Sony is triffic!

I agree completly, also worth noting that a modded original xbox can upscale and output via component, I've also heard good thing about that too.

I just tried an R1 dvd (had to backup to a dvdr to make it playable because of region lock)...

There were dodgy pans on it...

But it looks like my TV is still doing 50hz

So that will be the problem with the pans, not the xbox itself? Or did you mean R2?

Just to clarify:
1) It's been some months since I tried the 360 as a DVD-player. There may have been updates to the software via Live since then that would remedy the panning issues with the player. Haven't bothered trying as my Pio 989 is quite superb IMO, and doesn't make a sound when playing DVD's, or whatever I throw at it (I guess a sawblade would make it whine...) ;)
2) I never rate any DVD-player on other aspects if they fail a basic "panning excersise" like this. They can have the most beautiful colours, etc. But it really breaks the illusion for me when the picture stutters.
3) It was Region 2 of Shrek
4) 50Hz/60Hz doesn't matter, it's on my plasma.
5) It was hooked up via Monster Component cables.

Just to sum up, I can see that it's of use to anyone as a spare DVD-player, as the PS2 and the Xbox was to me (and still is throughout the house).
I do know that a lot of people don't have dedicated DVD-players and use gameconsoles for this, fine, they can be used for that. They just aren't the best you can get for that task, a standalone would almost always be better. all of course IMO.
And I haven't even touched the other missing links for me such as SACD/DVD-Audio/XVid/etc. Well, I'm not really missing Xvid, but would be a nice option.

Have a nice evening, whichever DVD-player you prefer.

Thats the point I'm making about the panning, I'm using a plasma too.

My xbox is set to output at 1080i

Play a region 2 dvd and its outputting at 50hz\576p

Play a region 1 dvd and it still seems to be outputting at 50hz (according to my plasma at least and its unlikely to be wrong)

That could be why?

But then it might not...

I'll have a look at a few more dvds since, as you say if panning is jerky then its unuseable...can't say there's much panning in the dvds I've tried so I'll have a look at some action stuff.

If I were you, I'd give it another go just to take a look see if it has been updated, but anyway...

:)

Xbox 360 DOES suppot DVD-Audio - according to an article I read...

dunno how that can be possible, thought DVD-Audio was analogue only...

Gonna try it later, my two sons are busy playing Oblibion atm.
Wonderful game, btw.

The 360 does not support the PCM part of DVD-Audio, there is no connection that would carry that from the Xbox, a future HDMI-cable might.
It does play DVD-Audio discs like my Porcupine Tree, Deadwing. It freezes on the static pictures displayed when playing the songs, but only the DTS and Stereo PCM part of the sound is available in the menu. Those play fine though. Gonna check this disc later too.

Cheers.

Actually I have watched a few dvds now and I do think its a better quality player than the original x box.
I have no idea what difference a highly regarded dvd player would bring to the table I have never seen one in action.
