1) to add mp3 playback,
2) to get a newer player than my 6 years old philips,
3) to get only 1 player (WAF inside ;) )
4) I don't want to spend about 400usd (price in europe) for a h/k hd970 wich has mp3 playback,
4 bis) to keep one eye on sacd/dvd audio and so on... even if the records are confidentially sold...

Implicit in musicmans question is the issue that no DVD at this price point is going to give you as good 2 channel playback as a dedicated CD player, if you can cope with having the extra box.
Im afraid that to get a DVD player with really good stereo reproduction you need to spend a lot of money, IMHO. That's not to say that DVD players arent capable of a "fair stab" at music reproduction.
Marantz are better than most, in this area.

Take a look at the Panasonic DVD-S47. I have been quite happy with two Panasonics I have owned for CD playback and MP3 playback also. If you can source one, look for the older S75 as well.
