I have just bought a Sony DVPNS76H DVD player and am impressed with it's build quality and picture quality.
One question I have is that when playing DivX files that are 624x352 (1.77:1 - ie 16:9) to my Panasonic 42" PW8 Plasma (via Component), I get borders on top and below the picture....
The same DivX files played without borders on my old Philips DVD player, and they should be standard 16:9 format - so why the borders? (The plasma is set to 16:9 mode)
I have ensured the DVD player is set up for a 16:9 screen - is there another setting somewhere? It looks like the DVD player thinks I'm using a 4:3 screen, because when I play DivX files that are 4:3 they fill the screen completely.
The only way to get full screen with the 16:9 DivX files is to press "Zoom" on the plasma....
The weird thing is when setting the plasma to 4:3 mode - you get a proper 16:9 image in the middle of the screen with borders on top and on the sides..... very weird!
Widescreen DVDs seem to play normally (with the right size borders on top and bottom)
Any ideas? :lease:

theres no current fix m8 - see a massive 60+ page post below
MY FIX
all i do is i have HDMI PLUS COMPONENT or SCART in the dvd player
watch DIVX files via component or scart
and use my TV to zoom them to full screen
as the sony wont show DIVX higher than 576P (shame it wont play 720P DIVX files :( , this is the only way round the problem i can think of)
hope this helps

i have the same problem with the denon 1930 and a panny crt.
the problem must be because the are 'files' and not dvd content.
dvd's are tweaked to fit widescreens depending on resolution.
my solution has been to only watch tv shows in divx format.
and only watch films in DVD format.

My DivX files are TV shows - and they're in 16:9 format.....

hi obo,
i have actually just thought of something.
this happens between my denon and my panny telly. via component.
if i were to play the same files on my samsung lcd and tosh 360 via HDMI the lcd stretches them to fit the screen.
i narrow this down to either panny or component being unadjustable.
it's an irritating problem for me too.
apologies if it doesn't help.

I am also passing the component signal through my Denon Amp (1920) but I doubt this has anything to do with it. My previous Philips DVD DivX player had no issues going throught the Denon Amp (with the same files) to the panny plasma, and while I haven't tried connecting the DVD player directly to the plasma I don't think it would make a difference. It looks like a bug in the Sony firmware - other people seem to be experiencing the same problems... :god:
Are you using a Sony DVPNS76H? or a Tosh 360?

i'm using the tosh 360.
if the files are 4:3 then the panny stretches them to fit.
if they are 4:3 on the samsung then it doesn't stretch them!
so vice versa for 16:9 on each screen.
my setup is denon 1930 and panny crt downstairs and tosh 360 with samsung 2674bdx upstairs.
it's a head scratcher.
we have one thing in common. panasonic. i expected 'panasonic auto' aspect to adjust them but it doesn't.

Panasonic plasmas don't have the "AUTO" like the CRTs do.

An update from Sony Support for anyone interested:
"Thank you for your recent enquiry.
In order to establish where the problem lies, could you please access the website site detailed below and download on or two of the free files offered.
www.DivX.com
If these files download and playback without any problem, this indicates that files you are downloading need to be passed through a DivX converter first. You may be able to download a tool to do this from the Internet.
Sony DVD recorders only support DivX Home Theatre files and you may encounter problems is files you download do not conform to this standard.
I hope this information is helpful."
so I did indeed download some .divx file from www.divx.com any sure enough they had the same problem.
So I replied:
"Files downloaded from DivX site have exactly the same problem.
They are the same format as all the DivX files I use on the player, and therefore suffer the same problems. I tried files that were 4:3, 16:9 and full widescreen from their website and all had the same problem.
The files are standard DivX and play with the DVD player - the only issue is the aspect ratio that they are output at. Other Sony DVPNS76H owners have reported the same problem and it sounds like it is a bug in the firmware when playing DivX files.
Do you know if there is a planned firmware fix for this issue?"
Their response:
"I would like to advise you that I will need to look into your enquiry further so I would be grateful if you could forward on your material such as the DivX material or home recorded footage. This will allow us to investigate further the occurrence of your problem and advise further.
The material will need to be sent for the attention of Mr William Wilson at the address below.
Sony United Kingdom Ltd
National Operations Centre
Pipers Way, Thatcham
RG19 4LZ
I hope that this information which you will be able to provide will aid in a more suitable answer to your enquiry."
Do they expect me to snail-mail them a CD of files?
I've heard Sony are a nightmare to deal with, but I never thought it would be this bad.....

The fore runner to the NS76H (the NS92v) that I have does the same thing. All DivX films, regardless of aspect ratio are displayed within a 4:3 frame - the only fix for this is to zoom/stretch the picture using the TV's functions.
