Pioneer DV-696AV-s problem?

I recently bought this player but unsure if this is a problem or just a characteristic of the player.

When I first insert a disc, you can hear a grinding noise as the laser resets but when the disc is playing it is very quiet.

Anyone alse have this problem or should I return it and get a replacement?
