Hi Mickey
Divx is just the codec used to compile the avi file hence you need the codec installed to view th avi. Its still and avi but was made using the Divx encoder.

All DivX, XVid encoded files will have the file extention .avi
If a DVD player has DivX certification it will play all similar .avi's whether they are DivX or XVid.

Hi Mickey123, yes codecs can be very confusing, i use a free software tool called "gspot" found at http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ its very good at identifying the codec to a particular video file, it also tells you what codecs you have stored on your machine, hope this helps you.

avi = container for video files, other examples are ogm and mkv. They can use different types of video stream (e.g. MPEG4 or ogg) and different types of audio (e.g. mp3 or AC3, another name for Dolby Digital)
divx / xvid = codecs that (usually) produce standard MPEG4 streams
MPEG4 = video compression standard. There are multiple encoders out there that produce MPEG4 video, much like there are multiple encoders for mp3.
MPEG2 = video compression standard on DVD
MPEG1 = video compression standard for VCD and SVCD
